As recounted in legend, an ordinary green snake once joined her dear white snake friend in cultivating her qi, training alongside her to move beyond the realm of animals and into that of humans as Xiaoqing ("Lil' Green") and Bai Suzhen. When her companion found romance with a brave and handsome human man, the green snake was wracked with jealousy—only putting it aside to defend them both against an attack by the Sorceror Monk Fahai, an envious turtle jing who believed that they had all three become abominations by leaving aside their place in the natural order. Fahai was defeated and cast into the sea, but not before he struck both himself and Xiaoqing with a petrifying curse, leaving the two of them trapped in the form of statues for centuries. In the modern era's Year of the Monkey, Doctor Omen of the Ministry of Self-Reliance discovered a means to restore Xiaoqing to life, giving her the new legal name and human identity of Peng Deilan. In return, Deilan agreed to act as the Wonder-Woman of China, continuing to pretect the animals and people of her homeland in a highly visible public role. Training and fighting alongside Super-Man and Bat-Man, she began to strike up a romance with the latter that was badly shaken when Fahai was restored to life with an infusion of the Doomsday Virus, leading to Deilan sustaining injuries that revealed her true form. Struggling with what she had hidden from her teammates, Deilan soon found amidst battles against a rampaging Superman clone that the truth forged a closer bond, as she and Bat-Man confessed their shared feelings of attraction, putting her qi back in balance and restoring her ability to take human form. Her connections to humanity reaffirmed, she reached out to her sworn sister and brother-in-law, both of whom had attained immortality through cultivation. Reconnecting with a family that had thought her lost to the ages, Deilan was shocked to learn that not only had Suzhen and Xian had a child, but that several generations of family remembered her as their lost heroic "Aunt Qing". Learning from Xian of one particular descendant who was deeply troubled by where his life had gone in pursuit of romance, Deilan contacted her great-grandnephew Musi and asked him to come home to China and family.... | ||||||||
