"I'm Saotome Ranma. Sorry about this." |
Raised by his step-father Saotome Genma without knowledge of his true parentage, Ranma grew up as the heir to a martial artst style, and was trained to be a 'man among men'—resulting in a lot of distress when he became enchanted by the waters of Niángnìquán: the Spring of Drowned Girl. Now transforming into a typically female form when splashed with cold or lukewarm water and returning to his birth form when exposed to hot water, Ranma spent a year struggling with his gender identity along with a host of romantic and martial troubles not limited to being engaged by arrangement to multiple women.
Foremost among these was Ranma's engagement to Tendō Akane, leading him and Genma to become long-term residents of the Tendō home, and drawing many conflicts caused by Genma (multiple spurious engagement offers, the arrival of Genma's martial arts master Happōsai, debts owed to the Chardin family) as well as Ranma himself (the Chinese Amazon Shānpú, possession of a Dragon's Whisker, and feuds with other martial artists).
The Battle at Jusendō
Ranma's connection to the enchanted springs of Zhòuquánxiāng (known in Japanese as Jusenkyō) eventually brought him into conflict with Sà Fūláng, AKA "Saffron", a leader of the Fènghuáng people of the eponymous mountain in western China. This battle resulted in the kidnapping and near-death of Akane, an event which had a profound impact on Ranma's views.
Not long after returning from China, Ranma and Akane were pressed into a marriage ceremony by their families; the interruption of the ceremony by others romantically pursuing Ranma or Akane (as well as a perfect storm of other martial arts chaos) nearly destroyed the Tendō Dōjō and threw off many of Ranma's relationships. Not long after, several of those who were pursuing him (or his 'cursed' form) were taken out of the picture by ultimatums or force.
Lilit Rising
Spoiler Alert! The following contains plot details for the events of lilit rising
As matters settled down for Ranma and he made his way through junior year of high school, an encounter with a visiting Bruce Wayne led him to not only discover his true parentage, but to come to identify as bigender, resolving a lifetime of internal conflicts over gender identity by affirming that they were both man and woman.
These events also led her to discover that the enchantment of Niángnìquán did not simply turn her into a woman: it gave her the ability to become a vague conceptual ideal of a woman, able to shift her identity with focus and be perceived as someone other than herself by those around her.
Taking part in the capture of the supervillain Veiniac, Ranma chose to visit his family in Gotham, and utilized a mix of his training, powers, and recent gifts from family to invent a superheroic identity as Lilit.
Plurality
Spoiler Alert! The following contains plot details for the events of Welcome to Gotham, Ranma:
During her stay in Gotham, Ranma came to recognize that some of what she had previously thought of as 'disguises' taking advantage of her powers were actually a reflection of the interaction between her powers, and an undiagnosed dissociative disorder.
|
Special Abilities:
- Autodidact: Ranma's ability to learn improves significantly under 'sink or swim' circumstances, and she demonstrates an ability to quickly pick up new skills when under pressure.
- Dissociative Disorder: Ranma possesses an as-yet undiagnosed condition linked to childhood trauma that causes him to share his body with several other minds. He is only recently coming to recognize that they are distinct, due to a tendency to co-front (sharing simultaneous control of the body) or not share memories when being the sole headmate fronting.
- Donohue, Eun-Ji: an analytical nonbinary woman, Eun-Ji greatly dislikes being imprecise, but also strongly owns their biracial identity in a way that Ranma tends to not think about if she can manage it. In their more self-reflective moments, Eun-Ji thinks of themself as the embodiment of the system's frustration and trauma at the double-edged sword of rigid expectations and painful misunderstandings.
- Gorogoro Myoko: a self-described ailuophile, Myoko gives a name and a voice to the trauma of the Neko-ken training. She starts to front when the horror of the others' phobia becomes overwhelming, replacing terror with obsession. Excitable, childish, and playful, Myoko views the world from the perspective of a catgirl.
- Lilit: the embodiment of Ranma's colder side reinforced by the 'Soul of Ice' training, Lilit first became self-aware when a personality-splitter incense caused her to manifest outside of the body (similar to events depicted in the anime episode "Ranma and the Evil Within"). She tends to be a jealous protector of Ranma and the others, and struggles with speaking vocally when not co-fronting.
- Lilit Costume: Similar to the Batsuit, Lilit's current costume is made of advanced fiber engineering laced with protective membranes filled with a non-Newtonian substance that hardens to the point of resisting small arms fire when hit by a sudden impact. The material is additionally insulated and flame-retardant, granting no small measure of environmental protection.
- Claws: the gloves and boots of the costume are constructed with extensible bladed tips featuring advanced non-conductive ceramics capable of piercing stone. These are activated by clenching the toes or holding the in a talon-like pose, and retracted by relaxing the digits.
- Facemask: a mechanism connected to a hidden switch at the base of the masks's horns causes a cover to extend over the wearer's mouth and nose which offers filtration against hazardous substances.
- Lenses: adapting technology originally developed by Jervis Tetch (the "Mad Hatter"), the lenses of the current Lilit mask confer immunity to a vaiety of hypnotic and illusory effects, as well as granting improved night vision and resistance to blinding by sudden exposure to intense glare.
- Linguistics: A native Japanese speaker, Ranma also speaks fluent English, and conversational French, Mandarin, and Russian. She is developing elementary proficiency in ASL and JSL, as well as the 'Language of Combat' taught by her birth father.
- Martial Arts:
- Ikeda-ryū Kenjutsu: training in his maternal family's style of swordplay has greatly improved Ranma's familiarity with the sword, adopting a style of fencing that emphasizes taking the opponent by surprise and making unexpected attacks.
- Musabetsu Kakuto Saotome-ryū:
- Mōko Takabisha: a technique Ranma developed as a counter to the depression-based ki attack known as the Shishi Hōkōdan, the Mōko Takabisha allows the user to externalize feelings of confidence and pride as a burst of destructive and intensely bright energy. Due to the more fleeting nature of the associated emotions, it is difficult to use, and lacks the range or eventual power of similar techniques.
- Umi-Sen-Ken: a suite of special techniques developed by Saotome Genma in imitation of a cat burglar, the "Thousand Ocean Fist" treats the opponent's body as a house to be robbed.
- Umi-Sen-Ken Revised—Deka-ryū: Eun-Ji's reinvention of the Umi-Sen-Ken imitates the most unassuming detectives by matching their ki with the environment, convincing opponents that they belong there and allowing them to note minute disturbances.
- Yama-Sen-Ken: another group of techniques developed by Genma, the "Thousand Mountain Fist" treats the opponent's body as a house subject to a violent home invasion.
- Yama-Sen-Ken Revised—Yami-no-Kishi-ryū: Lilit's adaptation of the Yama-Sen-Ken imitates the methods of the Batman Family with sudden appearances from the shadows to strike terror into an opponent and cause them to freeze.
- Neko-ken: a traumatic training method that gave Ranma a deep-seated case of ailurophobia in exchange for the ability to adopt exaggerated cat-like powers of superhuman leaping, agility, and the manifestation of normally invisible qi-claws. These abilities are not directly accessible to the rest of the system, with only Myoko being able to tap into them.
- Nǚjié Wǔshù: Ranma has learned a number of the secret techniques of the Nǚjié-zú (AKA "Chinese Amazons") of Qinghai.
- Hiryū Shōten Ha: a technique that creates a powerful upwards vortex by utilizing the difference between an opponent's 'hot' ki of anger and exertion, and the user's 'soul of ice'.
- Kachū Tenshin Amaguriken: a training technique to improve the speed of hand movements to the point of being able to grab objects bare-handed out of a fire without being burned.
- Zhòuquánxiāng Blessing—Woman: Ranma's enchantment not only causes her to change bodies from a typically-male form to a typically-female one, but also allows her to easily adopt roles and identities that seem real and distinct from her own body. When this 'glamour' is activated, witnesses perceive Ranma as disappearing, and someone else turning up in her place; her headmates fronting automatically triggers this power even when the physical transformation is inactive.
- Haitao: a cheery young woman from outside of Beijing, Haitao adapts to a variety of situations with ease, grace, and verve.
- Monica: an anxious girl trying to make ends meet, Monica's apparent shyness causes her to be overlooked in spite of her physical strength.
